KANSAS CROSSROADS

Kansas has a unique and interesting history. This is Kansas’ story through Quilt Patterns and Blocks.

Row 1

As our country moved westward, some settlers’ WAGON WHEELS rolled-----

Row 2 over the ROCKY ROADS TO KANSAS. During the day they may-------------
Border have seen flocks of WILD GEESE and herds of buffalo. Camps were set up at-
Row 3 night under the STOCKTON GOLDEN NUGGET and KANSAS STARS. -----
Some families decided to settle in Kansas. They may have lived
Row 4 in KANSAS DUGOUTS while building LOG CABINS. -------------------------
Row 5 Homesteads were established with barns being erected, livestock purchased ----
and crops planted.
Row 6 Then as now it took perseverance to weather the KANSAS TROUBLES. -------
Row 7 TUMBLEWEEDS and DEVILS CLAWS, --------------------------------------
Row 8 the social issue of temperance, (TEMPERENCE TREES), and-------------------
Row 9 PRICKLEY PEARS are just some of the problems. Over the years our state-----
has seen its share of TORNADOS.
Border Many things make Kansas unique: beautiful blue skies, white picket fences, ---
and SUNFLOWERS.
Row 10 MEADOWLARKS, HONEY BEES, ORNATE BOX TURTLES, and---------
BUFFALO are state symbols. RINGNECK PHEASANTS are a –
Common sight. HILLS AND VALLEYS at the RAONBOWS’ end
Is a beautiful sight to behold.
Row 11 WINDMILLS were once commonplace across the plains. ------------------------
Row 12 The rich soil has raised many bountiful crops of CORN, WHEAT, -------------
CORN AND BEANS and sunflowers.
We have much to be thankful for!
