Dear Quilters;
As we anticipate the first snow of the season, I am so thankful I have a
warm quilt to wrap up in!! Our guild has some warm quilt projects planned
that I hope we can all get wrapped up in!!
We enjoyed a short field trip as part of our October meeting. Cari Riffel at
Sue Veneer's demonstrated the very precise cutting she is able to do with her
laser machine -- another resource we can use in making intricate quilting patterns!!
Under Old Business, we wrapped up some details from the September Quilt Show.
By popular vote of our public viewers, Erma's embroidered quilt was selected
Best of Show, and Courtney had the most votes in the Challenge Fabric category.
Pictures from the Quilt Show are up on our web site, and Marilyn will send some
pictures from the event into our local papers.
Six of our members made the trip to Des Moines to take in the Quilt Show there.
They had a wonderful time, and gained ideas and inspirations from the quilts
they saw which were more of the traditional patterns that we are familiar with.
A lot of good ideas were presented and discussed during New Business. Through
our raffle quilt fundraising efforts, we are now in a position where we can afford
to bring in quilting programs, offer special classes for adults and youth, and
travel to see other quilt shows and exhibits. I am trying to compile a list of
these ideas and possible program ideas, so if you have any suggestions, please
share them with me.
SEW DAY ALERT!!! Now that the quilt show is finished, we have more time to attend
to charitable projects. At our last Sew Day, a quilt was completed to donate
to the Stockton Area Telethon. At our November Sew Days, we will be working on "I
Spy" quilts for two families in our county that are facing medical challenges.
If you can't attend the sew day, but have fabrics that would work for these projects,
please arrange for them to get to the Sew Day. Sew Days will be held on November
8th at Stockton, a Sew Night on November 10th (starting at 5:30 pm.), and our
regular Sew Day at Plainville on November 12th. Let's get as many of us as possible
together to work on these projects this month!
MAKE SOMEBODY A STAR!! The pumpkins are out for Halloween, and we will soon be
into the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Our Guild is planning a tree for
display at the Stockton Library. Karen B. and Janie are asking each member to
make a star decoration using Christmas fabrics. This could be a square with a
pieced star pattern in the middle, or a finished star. These need to be collected
by our November 20th meeting. For our December 15th meeting (weather permitting!!),
we are planning a pot luck meal starting at 6:30 pm with a gift exchange (suggested
$15.00 limit) to follow.
As we bring our 2008 quilting year to a close, I want to remind you to share
your pictures and news clippings with our Scrapbook Editor Kenda. Years from
now we will want to look back and remember all the fun we had throughout this
year!!
Happy Quilting!!
Susan : ))

I have decided to challenge each of us a little bit this year. I have broken the year down into 4 sections. Each section will focus on a different technique. Each month will be a block that you could save and put with other blocks or you might decide to make a completed project based on that block. The first three months will be paper piecing blocks, then applique blocks, then some large blocks for fun and finally some blocks that are a combination of all three. I think many of the blocks will make great table runners, placemats, or small wall hangings, as well as full size quilts.
November's block is Honey Bee (10" part applique block) http://www.quilterscache.com/H/HoneyBeeBlock.html
October's block is Snowball 2 (8" block) http://www.quilterscache.com/S/Snowball2Block.html
September's block is Indian Square (20" Block) http://www.quilterscache.com/I/IndianSquaresBlock.html
August's block is Easy Carpenter's Wheel http://www.quilterscache.com/C/CarpentersWheelBlock.html
