Crossroads Quilt Guild November 2008 Minutes

November 17, 2008 the meeting was called to order by President Susan Gartrell. The South side ladies were the first in the service line tonight. Committee and Refreshment lists for 2009 were at the head of the line to sign before we could eat and will be available to those in December meeting that were unable to attend this evenings meeting.

Roll call was answered by 21 present.

Treasure Report by Marilyn: All bills being paid brings balance to $2,267.21.

Our program this evening was being introduced to “tufting”. Thanks to the ladies who were able to share the knowledge of this unique finishing on a quilt. Ladies continued to work on Eye Spy charity quilts this evening too.

Ladies working on the library tree need all star projects before Friday, November 21st and need volunteers to assist on setting up the Christmas tree at 10:00 a.m. that day.

Sew days reported: Stockton had 9 in attendance and Plainville had 6.
Next sew dates are: Stockton December 13th & Plainville December 10th.

Potluck and gift exchange at next meeting December 15th at 6:30 p.m. Gifts are not to exceed $15.00 and the officers/refreshment committee are to be present early enough to help set up foods brought in. Susan G. will check supplies.

This month brought time to elect officers and Susan G. reports officers for next year are as follows: Susan G. will remain president, Gladys M. as vice-president, Marilyn D. as treasurer and Kenda R. as secretary. Motion was made, seconded and carried for these officers to serve in the 2009 positions.

Marilyn D. & Elaine H. reported that the baby quilt for the New Year baby is near done. Susan G. will check standing rules on this project.

Donna G. is asking for Christmas quilts to display at the museum. She also told of Doreen Dix’s cookie jar collection on display at the museum, so please take time to go by and see them.

Membership dues will be collected in January 2009, they are $15.

Susan reported that when she reviewed the bylaws she discovered that any lady who has consecutively been a member for 5 years and is 65 years of age can be automatically a lifetime member and no longer pay dues. Ladies, please bring new members into the guild to be a part of this great organization of friendships, projects, and knowledge to share among quilters.

Susan G. passed around the signup sheet for the birthday fat quarters. This is a fun and rewarding opportunity in the guild, consider signing ladies and get your stash built up.

President Susan G. will be looking for a new challenge material for next years project.

Door prize was won by Kenda R. and was brought by Karen R.; 10 fat quarters won by Karen R..
Meeting was adjourned.

Co-Secretary Kenda Ross

Dear Quilters;

I think November came early this year!!! With that extra sew night, this month has flown by, and I really appreciate everyone who attended our November meeting and Sew Days despite harvest and other conflicts. We got our charity quilts finished and just in time for Christmas!!

Many of you have been working on crafty items for the holidays. I haven't done much in the way of family preparations, but I do have my gift ready for our next guild meeting!! Our December Guild meeting will be Monday, December 15th, starting at 6:30 p.m. (NOTE EARLIER TIME). A potluck meal is planned, so be prepared for lots of good food and fellowship. The gift exchange is not mandatory -- if you want to take part just bring a gift (around $15.00 value) and we will have fun seeing what is under the wrappings!!

Congratulations to our new old officers!! According to our guild bylaws, November is the time for officer election, and I was pleased to have our current officers agree to stay on for another term. And, as you may have heard, in studying our Guild Bylaws and Standing Rules, I discovered that we have several members who are eligible to become Lifetime Members. According to the Standing Rules, "Any member who has been a member for five consecutive years and is over the age of 65 could become a Lifetime Member". Since we recently recognized several of our member as "Golden Girls", I know we have several who qualify for this distinction. I will check the past membership rolls and have a list of those members at our next meeting.

The Lifetime Membership clause is definitely a benefit for our older members, but I am not sure if it is a benefit or a detriment for our guild. It is good that since Lifetime Members are still members, they can still serve as officers, and they can still take part in all of our quilting, committee, and charity work. However, there may be lean years when our treasury will miss the dues they would have paid; and we may find that other complications arise from following this rule. The Bylaws are important guidelines, but they CAN be changed if they don't reflect the needs of our group.

As we bring an end to 2008 and prepare for 2009, we do start a new membership year. Dues are due on January 1st, and it is just easier for our treasurer, the delivery of our newsletters, and the functions of our committees if everyone has their dues paid promptly. And, even though new members can join at anytime, this is a good time to bring new members on board. Please reach out and invite a friend to join us!!!

We started to fill in our 2009 Committee Lists at our November meeting. These lists will also be available at our December meeting as well. We need volunteers on our Refreshment Sign-up Sheet for February, March, August, and November. The Standing Committees include Program, Sew Day, Fair Booth, Nominating, New Year's Baby Quilt, Library Tree Display, Raffle Quilt, and Refreshment Committees. These committees are not difficult and are an opportunity for us to become better acquainted with each other as we work together. I would much prefer that each of you choose the committee that YOU want to serve on. However, "According to the Bylaws" the President can appoint members to fill committees if necessary!!! Also, Linda G. is getting things organized for the Birthday FQ exchange, so get your name and birthday to her if you'd like to be remembered with a FQ on your special day.

Janie and I set up the CrossRoads Quilter's Guild tree at the Stockton Public Library. It looks very nice and the Parade of Christmas Trees is very creative and well worth your time to stop by and see!
I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and look forward to seeing you in December!!
Happy Quilting!!
Susan : ))

Put these dates on your calendar:

Sew Day Plainville 12/13/08 -- Sew Day Stockton
12/15/08 -- Crossroads Guild Christmas Meeting at 6:30 pm in Stockton

I have decided to challenge each of us a little bit this year. I have broken the year down into 4 sections. Each section will focus on a different technique. Each month will be a block that you could save and put with other blocks or you might decide to make a completed project based on that block. The first three months will be paper piecing blocks, then applique blocks, then some large blocks for fun and finally some blocks that are a combination of all three. I think many of the blocks will make great table runners, placemats, or small wall hangings, as well as full size quilts.

December's block is Moon and Stars (12" block) http://www.quilterscache.com/M/Moon&StarBlock.html

November's block is Honey Bee (10" part applique block) http://www.quilterscache.com/H/HoneyBeeBlock.html

October's block is Snowball 2 (8" block) http://www.quilterscache.com/S/Snowball2Block.html

September's block is Indian Square (20" Block) http://www.quilterscache.com/I/IndianSquaresBlock.html

August's block is Easy Carpenter's Wheel http://www.quilterscache.com/C/CarpentersWheelBlock.html

July's block is Woven Path (24" Block) http://www.quilterscache.com/W/WovenPathsBlock.html

June's block is Patchwork Butterfly http://www.quilterscache.com/P/PatchworkButterflyBlock.html

May's block is Moon Over the Mountain http://www.quilterscache.com/M/MoonOvertheMountainBlock.html

April's block is a simple appliqué Butter and Eggs Block http://www.quilterscache.com/B/Butter&EggsBlock.html

March's block is a simple Farm Friendliness http://www.quilterscache.com/F/FarmFriendlinessBlock.html
